Over a period of Eleven years from 1846 to 1853 the population of Ireland decreased by one fourth, all due to potato blight.
In 1846 the food position was very bad, and farmers planted a hug potato crop. But an exceptionally bad season resulted in the spread of potato blight, and the crop was a total loss.
Then followed famine and pestilence caused by the mould and decaying matter from the ruin crops. Vast numbers of people died and many more emigrated.
