THE HEAT WAVE.
For eight successive days the highest shade thermometer readings in Adelaide has gone over 80 deg., so that perspiring citizens who naturally expect a little easing off in oppressive weather after the middle of April, may well be excused for talking about the “heat wave.”
On several occasions of late the official forecasts have promised relief, but the promise has
not been fulfilled. Little hope is held out by the Government Meteorologist of an early cool change.
In his report last night he said:-“Away from the coast, where cool to moderate temperatures prevailed, fine and warm weather was experienced in South Australia to-day, the highest reading occurring at Adelaide, 88. 5 deg.
The high noted yesterday over the south-west corner of the continent moved rapidly eastward, and it is shown in this morning’s chart as an elongated system, stretching along the ocean from the south coast of Western Australia to Tasmania.
The greater part of inland Australia is under monsoonal influence. During today barometers have risen somewhat in this State, indicating the strengthening and eastward movement of the anti-cyclone, and under these conditions fine and warm weather should prevail to-morrow, with variable winds, chiefly easterly.”
