This Polar community entered on the fourteenth day of what, for want of a better equivalent, might be called the “hottest winter heat wave in the memory of the oldest inhabitants.” At 8 a.m. today the temperature<\/span> soared to 25 degrees above zero.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n

\n
To add to the complexity a blizzard, with soft moist snow, which was almost like rain, came from the east.<\/div>\n
However, the warm spell is a boon to the expedition. The tractor department is overhauling three machines. As handling metal at low temperatures <\/span>is cruel work, the men are glad that<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
it has moderated.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The present weather is in contrast to that experienced at the beginning of the winter, when the Byrd Expedition reported temperatures<\/span> as low as 72\u00bd degrees below zero. The lowest ever recorded by an Antarctic<\/span> expedition is 76 degrees below zero.<\/div>\n
It is not unusual in Antarctic<\/span> winters to have an occasional day above zero, but the present temperatures<\/span> are most unusual.<\/div>\n
During the first Bryd expedition the highest temperature<\/span> was 17 degrees above zero.<\/div>\n
At Mount Gambier yesterday morning the temperature was 32 degrees above zero\u2014<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
