Considering the present condition of the hills country, and the fact that most of the undergrowth in the Mount Lofty Ranges is as dry as tinder, it is astonishing that so few fires have been witnessed this season.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

During the last few days the people of the metropolis have noticed smoke billowing up from behind the rises in the direction of Summertown, and many have been the surmises whether a serious outbreak had at last occurred. Fortunately, however, this is not the case. Although, for some time past, there have been a few fires in various parts of the ranges, none of them has assumed serious proportions. The smoke<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

observable in Adelaide on Saturday and Sunday came from two localities \u2014 in the vicinity of Uraidla. and near the old mines in the neighbourhood of Grunthal. The people of the district concerned were able<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

in both cases to keep the conflagrations in hand, although, had the wind been strong, it cannot be doubted that much trouble would have been experienced. Many of the most serious fires the hills have known<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

have been caused by careless picnickers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A cigar or a cigarette end thrown carelessly among some bushes, dry from the summer’s heat, may very easily arouse a fiery demon that will raze miles of fencing to the ground and ruin homesteads, so that travellers in the various, portions of the hills should take the strictest possible precautions to prevent such catastrophes.<\/div>\n
