Only three times during the many years the heat records have been kept at the Observatory has the temperature to-day been exceeded.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">The highest record was in January. 1862, when the shade temperature reached 111.2deg.; in 1876 110.7deg. was reached, and 110.5deg. in the summer of 1882.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">The excessive heat is largely due to fiery north-west winds, which set in at an early hour in the<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zone onPage readMode\" data-page-id=\"2348412\" data-x=\"1216\" data-y=\"1107\" data-w=\"895\" data-h=\"945\" data-rotation=\"-1\">\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">morning, and continued to blow until 5 in the evening, when a cooler wind came suddenly up from the south, reducing the thermometer to the extent of 20deg. within half as many minutes.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">This was succeeded by thunder and cooling showers.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">A couple of hours later a heavy downpour set in, making the night delightfully cool. Telegrams<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read clicked\">from the country districts show heat generally throughout the colony.
