Scientists now suspect the event was linked to a gigantic blob of warm water extending from the Uruguayan coast far into the South Atlantic, a blob that has only gotten warmer in the years since.<\/p>\n<p id=\"text-4PIITREBFNBUHP3KS7GKEJLIFU\" class=\"pg-body-copy first-temp\">The mysterious blob covers 130,000 square miles of ocean, an area nearly twice as big as this small country. And it has been heating up extremely rapidly \u2014 by over <span data-c=\"2 degrees Celsius\" data-f=\"3.6 degrees Fahrenheit\">2 degrees Celsius<\/span> \u2014 or 2C \u2014 over the past century, double the global average. At its center, it\u2019s grown even hotter, warming by as much as <span data-c=\"3 degrees Celsius\" data-f=\"5.4 degrees Fahrenheit\">3 degrees Celsius<\/span>, according to one analysis.<\/p>\n<p id=\"text-U3C56AVGDVESLDAIWT6WZKVIIQ\" class=\"pg-body-copy embed-ad-after\">The entire global ocean is warming, but some parts are changing much faster than others \u2014 and the hot spot off Uruguay is one of the fastest.
