A mysterious warming of the climate was slowly manifesting it self in the <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1139\" data-y=\"8254\" data-w=\"116\" data-h=\"38\">Arctic,<\/span> Dr. Ahlmann said, and, if the Antarctic ice regions and the major Greenland ice cap should reduce at the same rate as the present melting in the <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1438\" data-y=\"8420\" data-w=\"116\" data-h=\"32\">Arctic, <\/span>oceanic surfaces would rise to catastrophic proportions and people living in the lowlands along their shores would be inundated. He said that temperatures in the <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"907\" data-y=\"8665\" data-w=\"104\" data-h=\"27\">Arctic<\/span> had increased 10deg. Fahrenheit since 1900\u2013an \u201cenormous\u201d rise \u2018from a scientific standpoint.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zone onPage readMode\" data-page-id=\"3810285\" data-x=\"1568\" data-y=\"8145\" data-w=\"670\" data-h=\"680\" data-rotation=\"-1\">\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">The waters in the Spitsbergen area in the same period had risen three to five degrees in temperature and one to one and a half millimeters yearly in level.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">\u201cThe <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1725\" data-y=\"8428\" data-w=\"107\" data-h=\"31\">Arctic<\/span> change is so serious that I hope an international agency can speedily be formed to study the conditions on a global basis.\u201d he added.
