The maximum shade temperature is 106 degrees.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">The city is smothered in dust and tar fumes, the city council having put down fresh coats of tar and sand in Swanston street.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Mae Robertson has closed down his confectionery factory, owing to the heat, and 700 hands have been thrown out of work.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Guest&#8217;s biscuit factory has been closed, but the firm is generously paying its employees their wages.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">At the Stock Exchange one of the members tried to adjourn the sittings, but failed.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Mr. John Wren was obliged to postpone the Fitzroy race meeting through the great heat.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">There were 14 corpses at the Morgue to-day, and the stench was unbearable.
