February 10.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Owing to the likelihood of the collapse of workers attempts removal of snow from the streets was stopped.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">There is a danger of famine and the supply of flour is very limited.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Most of the shops and all the theatres are closed. All streets are empty.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">The world famous train, the Orient express, from Vienna on January 30th is covered in snow at East Thrace. It is understood that the passengers still have sufficient food and fuel.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">The devastating cold is widespread throughout Europe.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">The ice has compelled the closing of the Kiel Canal.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Ice on the Great Lakes at Berlin is 18 inches thick. All shipping on the Rhine is suspended for a fortnight while deer are venturing into the towns in search of food.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Places nearly 1000 miles south of London are experiencing lower temperatures than England.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Marseilles recorded 5 degree below freezing point and areas between the Baltic and the Black Sea between 30 and 70 degrees below freezing point.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Reports from Moscow describe conditions as appalling. The mercury has ceased to register, since the temperature in certain districts has fallen 58 degrees below zero.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Schools are closed and buses have been prevented from running, owing to the impossibility of starting the engine.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Milk is freezing and, bursting the cans<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Food supplies, are disorganised.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">BERLIN, February 11.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">The ice wave is the worst since 1719, when records were first kept.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">To-day Silesia registered 49 degrees F. below zero<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">A sharp detonation at Breslau led to the discovery that the bridge over the Oder had cracked laterally as a result of the cold. The bridge has been closed to traffic.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">LONDON, February II.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">The Zuider Zee is frozen, and it is possible to skate to the island of Marken<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Many canals are frozen and traffic is suspended.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">In Vienna the temperature is 54 degrees below zero, which is the coldest since 1775.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">The Danube is frozen.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">In some parts of Hungary there is 54 degrees of frost. A nightwatchman at Vienna returning home, found both his children frozen to death.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">A message from Berlin states that 130 steamers are icebound in the Baltic at the estuary of the Elbe. The passengers, including one woman, suffered severely from the biting winds.
