Retrieved September 14, 2022, from <a href=\"https:\/\/trove.nla.gov.au\/newspaper\/article\/69638689?searchTerm=scientists%20have%20confirmed%20the%20fact%20that%20the%20arctic%20regions&amp;searchLimits=#\">https:\/\/trove.nla.gov.au\/newspaper\/article\/69638689?searchTerm=scientists%20have%20confirmed%20the%20fact%20that%20the%20arctic%20regions&amp;searchLimits=#<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\"><span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1759\" data-y=\"2671\" data-w=\"98\" data-h=\"21\">Scientists<\/span> <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1857\" data-y=\"2671\" data-w=\"98\" data-h=\"21\">have<\/span> <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1955\" data-y=\"2671\" data-w=\"98\" data-h=\"21\">confirmed<\/span> <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2053\" data-y=\"2671\" data-w=\"98\" data-h=\"21\">the<\/span> <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1731\" data-y=\"2701\" data-w=\"85\" data-h=\"21\">fact that<\/span> <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1816\" data-y=\"2701\" data-w=\"85\" data-h=\"21\">the<\/span> <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1901\" data-y=\"2701\" data-w=\"85\" data-h=\"21\">Arctic<\/span> <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1986\" data-y=\"2701\" data-w=\"85\" data-h=\"21\">regions<\/span> around Spitzbergen are warming up at <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2051\" data-y=\"2731\" data-w=\"64\" data-h=\"24\">the<\/span> rate of approximately one degree in every two years.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Since 1910, when observations first started in those <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1985\" data-y=\"2851\" data-w=\"85\" data-h=\"24\">regions,<\/span> <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2070\" data-y=\"2851\" data-w=\"85\" data-h=\"24\">the<\/span> cumulative rise of winter temperature has amounted to nearly 16 degrees.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Such a profound change has been attended by new and strange phenomena over <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1815\" data-y=\"3006\" data-w=\"86\" data-h=\"23\">the<\/span> whole area surrounding <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2159\" data-y=\"3006\" data-w=\"86\" data-h=\"23\">the <\/span>Polar basin. It has been found <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1730\" data-y=\"3068\" data-w=\"85\" data-h=\"23\">that the<\/span> Polar iceflelds are receding gradually northwards, while soil which at one time remained solidly frozen throughout <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1814\" data-y=\"3158\" data-w=\"86\" data-h=\"21\">the<\/span> year now undergoes partial thaw during <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1983\" data-y=\"3187\" data-w=\"85\" data-h=\"24\">the<\/span> <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2068\" data-y=\"3187\" data-w=\"85\" data-h=\"24\">Arctic<\/span> summers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">In <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1825\" data-y=\"3246\" data-w=\"69\" data-h=\"24\">the<\/span> Barents Sea area where, during earlier observations, only small patches became free from ice, large spaces of open water now occur at frequent intervals. Ice-breakers and other vessels which regularly make journeys to <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2071\" data-y=\"3426\" data-w=\"86\" data-h=\"26\">the<\/span> far North are now able to penetrate with comparative ease into <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2035\" data-y=\"3488\" data-w=\"103\" data-h=\"28\">regions<\/span> which could not be reached twenty years ago.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">There has been a gradual drift northward of several kinds of fish into areas once completely ice covered.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\"><span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1751\" data-y=\"3672\" data-w=\"81\" data-h=\"22\">The<\/span> milder conditions <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1994\" data-y=\"3672\" data-w=\"81\" data-h=\"22\">have<\/span> not been confined to areas north of <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2093\" data-y=\"3703\" data-w=\"74\" data-h=\"21\">the<\/span> Russian coast. From parts of Greenland comes evidence of a higher winter temperature, with considerably less snow, than was <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1916\" data-y=\"3822\" data-w=\"65\" data-h=\"24\">the<\/span> case in <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2111\" data-y=\"3822\" data-w=\"65\" data-h=\"24\">the<\/span> early part of <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1893\" data-y=\"3853\" data-w=\"86\" data-h=\"22\">the<\/span> twentieth century. When this warming-up process was first noticed, says a writer in <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2091\" data-y=\"3913\" data-w=\"74\" data-h=\"23\">the<\/span> \u201cEvening Standard,\u201d <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1824\" data-y=\"3943\" data-w=\"104\" data-h=\"20\">scientists<\/span> were inclined to attribute it to a temporary increase in <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1720\" data-y=\"4003\" data-w=\"86\" data-h=\"21\">the<\/span> volume of <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1978\" data-y=\"4003\" data-w=\"86\" data-h=\"21\">the<\/span> North Atlantic Drift, or even to a change in <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2168\" data-y=\"4030\" data-w=\"64\" data-h=\"26\">the <\/span>course of <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1849\" data-y=\"4062\" data-w=\"65\" data-h=\"29\">the<\/span> river of warmth, but subsequent events point to this theory being only partially correct.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Parts of <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1885\" data-y=\"4153\" data-w=\"69\" data-h=\"20\">the<\/span> Polar <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2023\" data-y=\"4153\" data-w=\"69\" data-h=\"20\">regions<\/span> not affected by <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1863\" data-y=\"4182\" data-w=\"72\" data-h=\"24\">the<\/span> warm waters <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2079\" data-y=\"4182\" data-w=\"72\" data-h=\"24\">have<\/span> grown decidedly warmer in <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1939\" data-y=\"4211\" data-w=\"74\" data-h=\"25\">the<\/span> last 20 years, while temperatures <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1977\" data-y=\"4241\" data-w=\"129\" data-h=\"21\">have<\/span> become higher in <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1872\" data-y=\"4269\" data-w=\"72\" data-h=\"23\">the<\/span> far north-east of Siberia and well inland\u2014remote from oceanic effects.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">In support of <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1924\" data-y=\"4359\" data-w=\"60\" data-h=\"23\">the<\/span> belief <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2044\" data-y=\"4359\" data-w=\"60\" data-h=\"23\">that<\/span> <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2104\" data-y=\"4359\" data-w=\"60\" data-h=\"23\">the<\/span> Atlantic river of warmth cannot be wholly responsible for <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2025\" data-y=\"4421\" data-w=\"103\" data-h=\"24\">the<\/span> widespread rise in temperature there are <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2144\" data-y=\"4447\" data-w=\"86\" data-h=\"25\">the <\/span>trustworthy records obtained by Mr. J. B. Kincer, of <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2008\" data-y=\"4509\" data-w=\"73\" data-h=\"25\">the<\/span> Weather Bureau at Washington, which show <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2057\" data-y=\"4539\" data-w=\"85\" data-h=\"24\">that<\/span> <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2142\" data-y=\"4539\" data-w=\"85\" data-h=\"24\">the <\/span>rise in temperature at places as far apart as Canada and Africa, South America and Asia, Bombay and Santiago (Chile) has been well marked since <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1804\" data-y=\"4686\" data-w=\"81\" data-h=\"29\">the<\/span> middle of last century.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">It is possible <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1920\" data-y=\"4718\" data-w=\"61\" data-h=\"22\">that<\/span> <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1981\" data-y=\"4718\" data-w=\"61\" data-h=\"22\">the<\/span> world as a whole is becoming warmer. One scientist puts forward <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1905\" data-y=\"4777\" data-w=\"62\" data-h=\"24\">the<\/span> theory <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2029\" data-y=\"4777\" data-w=\"62\" data-h=\"24\">that<\/span> an increase in carbon dioxide (due to <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2153\" data-y=\"4791\" data-w=\"72\" data-h=\"40\">the <\/span>huge amounts of coal being used) may be responsible for such a change, while astronomers look to <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2055\" data-y=\"4897\" data-w=\"83\" data-h=\"22\">the<\/span> sun for an explanation.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Quite apart from any fluctuations in <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1798\" data-y=\"4989\" data-w=\"76\" data-h=\"20\">the<\/span> sun\u2019s actual output of radiative energy, it is possible <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2007\" data-y=\"5016\" data-w=\"72\" data-h=\"26\">that<\/span> <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2079\" data-y=\"5016\" data-w=\"72\" data-h=\"26\">the<\/span> warmth received from <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1881\" data-y=\"5047\" data-w=\"75\" data-h=\"23\">the<\/span> sun may vary from time to time due to <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2056\" data-y=\"5076\" data-w=\"67\" data-h=\"23\">the<\/span> earth passing through <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"1812\" data-y=\"5108\" data-w=\"89\" data-h=\"19\">regions<\/span> of space in which meteoric dust is unevenly distributed.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is The World Coming To?
