When our climate is \u201cthe most important moral challenge\u201d why is it there is so little interest in our longest and oldest data?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h1>\n<div class=\"post-bodycopy clearfix\">\n<p><strong>Who knew that one of the most meticulous and detailed temperature records in the world from the 1800\u2032s comes from Adelaide, largely thanks to Sir Charles Todd. The West Terrace site in Adelaide was one of the best in the world at the time, and provides accurate historic temperatures from\u00a0 \u201cAustralia\u2019s\u00a0first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rahs.org.au\/history-resources\/the-first-weather-bureau\/\">permanent weather bureau<\/a> at Adelaide in 1856\u2033. (Rainfall records even appear to go as far back as 1839.) \u00a0Lance Pidgeon went delving into the National Archives and was surprised at what he found. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If we want to understand our climate the records from the 1800\u2032s in Adelaide are surely worth attention?<\/p>\n<p>The BOM usually shows graphs like this one below starting in 1911. You might think you are looking at the complete history of Adelaide temperatures and that smoothed temperature is rising inexorably, but the historic records remain unseen. While \u201chottest\u201d ever records are proclaimed in the media, few go hunting for older <em>hotter<\/em> records. Yet, one of the hottest temperatures recorded in Australia were recorded in <a href=\"http:\/\/joannenova.com.au\/2012\/07\/charles-sturts-time-so-hot-that-thermometers-exploded-was-australias-hottest-day-in-1828-53-9c\/\">1828<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/joannenova.com.au\/2013\/01\/australia-was-hot-and-is-hot-so-what-this-is-not-an-unusual-heat-wave\/\">raging heatwaves<\/a> with temperatures over 50C occurred in the 1800s.
