FOLLOWING an exceptionally dry winter and early spring, Sydney has been in the grip of a record<\/span> heat<\/span> wave. On three days of last week the city was oppressed by record<\/span> high temperatures for November, the heat<\/span> being accentuated by scorching winds laden with smoke from bushfires.<\/div>\n
At 9 a.m. on Friday of last week the temperature was 93 degrees, the highest November registration for that hour in the morning since weather data has been compiled in Sydney. At 12.50 p.m. the reading was 99.8 degrees, the highest November registration since 1923.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Water consumption has been in accord with the weather. For the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. on Friday, the metropolitan consumption was 141,831,000 gallons. Water shortages were reported from several suburbs.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Very trying conditions have been experienced, also, in the country. On that oppressive Friday terrific heat<\/span> was experienced in the central, northern, and eastern districts, the highest temperature reported to the Weather Bureau being 109 degrees, at Bourke, Walgett reported<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
