V. Sverdrup.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">Stating this in an English journal recently Dr. J. Gordon Coot, a leading British meteorologist, says that weather scientists in Britain have no doubt whatever that the climates of Britain and other regions of the Northern Hemisphere are gradually but surely getting <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2731\" data-y=\"1132\" data-w=\"123\" data-h=\"50\">warmer.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">\u201cFactual evidence,\u201d he says, \u201cconfirms that Britain\u2019s climate is getting <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"2865\" data-y=\"1169\" data-w=\"85\" data-h=\"47\">warmer,<\/span> and this appears to be a part of a general softening of the climate in the northern latitudes of the Atlantic-European system.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zone onPage readMode\" data-page-id=\"10363414\" data-x=\"2576\" data-y=\"1298\" data-w=\"576\" data-h=\"365\" data-rotation=\"-1\">\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">This opinion is not based on human judgment which, he says, is not to be relied upon in assess-<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">ing changes through the years. We forget very quickly. The year that has just gone by is likely to carry more weight in forming our opinion than the year of a decade or so ago.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zone onPage readMode\" data-page-id=\"10363414\" data-x=\"3154\" data-y=\"1298\" data-w=\"564\" data-h=\"1760\" data-rotation=\"-1\">\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Meteorologists have tried to rationalise weather cycles by analysis of climatic records. But they cannot reach any satisfactory conclusions on the regularity of climatic ups and downs.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">One of the difficulties is the lack of facts.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">Statistics do not go back far enough to take in any lengthy climatic cycles. We have to seek<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">more factual evidence; and we have to extend our investigations to cover much more of the earth than Britain itself.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Dr. Cook claims that one of the things we can rely on in following climatic variations is the timber line.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">This is the boundary fixed by nature beyond which it is too cold for trees to grow. There is a tim-<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">ber line in northern Europe en- closing the polar region where the climate is too harsh to support tree growth.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">There are similar timber lines on mountain ranges. \u201cIt has been shown quite definitely that the timber line in recent years has been moving further north and further up the mountain sides. Trees are growing in areas of northern Europe, and at high altitudes where they would not grow before,\u201d he states.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">ARCTIC ICE-CAP<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Confirmation of this change is coming from the Arctic ice-cap.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">The great slab of ice that covers the North Pole is melting much more rapidly than it is being re-<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">placed.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">The same thing, he says, is happening to glaciers in mountains like the Alps. All are getting<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">smaller; some have disappeared.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">One glacier in Lapland is 50 feet thinner than it was 20 years ago.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">In Iceland, land that has been hidden from view for hundreds of years is now being uncovered by melting ice.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">Greenland is thawing steadily.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zone onPage readMode\" data-page-id=\"10363414\" data-x=\"3720\" data-y=\"993\" data-w=\"608\" data-h=\"1127\" data-rotation=\"-1\">\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">So much for the land.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">In the sea there has been a pronounced migration of staple fish\u2014cod, herring, haddock and halibut.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">The northern waters where fish are feeding in Arctic regions where previously the water has been too cold.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">A graph of five-yearly mean temperatures for London discloses a slight but steady rise for more than 200 years.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">The scientific study of ocean currents is carried out by the Admiralty. \u201cMuch of this work is<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">secret,\u201d Dr. Cook says, \u201cbut I obtained official permission to study the information available with the co-operation of the Admiralty\u2019s hydrographer, Dr. J. N.
