According to one theory, \u201cToronto, Leningrad and Glasgow ought by now to have disappeared under thick ice sheets\u201d.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">There is also evidence that its onset could be dramatically sudden, a \u201csnow blitz\u201d rather than the gradual spreading of glaciers, Mr Calder said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zone onPage readMode\" data-page-id=\"12220083\" data-x=\"3934\" data-y=\"760\" data-w=\"463\" data-h=\"1234\" data-rotation=\"-1\">\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read clicked\">The picture was complicated by a cycle of miniature ice ages.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Scientist Mr George Denton, of the University of Maine, had produced evidence indicating that the world was in fact already in the middle of such an age and that the warmer weather<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">this century was freakish.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">\u201cThe cooling of the northern hemisphere since 1950, and the dreadful droughts in Africa and India in the 1970s, may well be signs that we are feeling the effects of the little ice age again\u201d, Mr Calder said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">This heightened the risk of a big ice age.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">\u201cThe next ice age is due soon and it can begin to bite\u201d suddenly. The new knowledge is so recent and ill-digested that the precise meanings of \u2018soon\u2019 and \u2018suddenly\u2019 are still rather vague.
