Retrieved October 26, 2023, from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/trove.nla.gov.au\/newspaper\/article\/130124300?searchTerm=october%20heat&amp;searchLimits=#\">https:\/\/trove.nla.gov.au\/newspaper\/article\/130124300?searchTerm=october%20heat&amp;searchLimits=#<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Further evidence of the most extraordinary meteorological conditions of the year 1914 has been given during the past week, when the maximum shade temperature every day has been considerably over normal spring readings.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">Starting on Wednesday last the reading at Faull\u2019s was 90 degrees, and on succeeding days the weather became aggressively hot for this time of the year.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">On Thursday the thermometer registered 94 1\/4 degrees, Friday 96, Saturday 102, and Sunday 101.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">So pronounced was the\u00a0<span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"4037\" data-y=\"973\" data-w=\"87\" data-h=\"25\">heat\u00a0<\/span>on the last two days mentioned that many people were almost prostrated by this latest act of vindictiveness on the part of the clerk of the weather.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Such scorching days as we have experienced are exceptional for October. Last year the highest reading for that month in Warracknabeal was 90 degrees on\u00a0<span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3864\" data-y=\"1251\" data-w=\"87\" data-h=\"25\">October<\/span>\u00a011th.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">The first really hot day was experienced on November 29th, when the shade reading was 102.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">Going back to October, 1912, the records show that the month was comparatively cool. The highest point reached was 96 degrees on\u00a0<span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3679\" data-y=\"1466\" data-w=\"75\" data-h=\"24\">October<\/span>\u00a030th.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">Bad as was last week\u2019s weather upon, citizens in good health, it was more severely felt by those who are suffering from the distressing complaint of influenza, which appears to be more virulent than usual this year.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">In Melbourne Saturday was the hottest day ever experienced in\u00a0<span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3817\" data-y=\"1713\" data-w=\"105\" data-h=\"27\">October.<\/span>\u00a0Shortly after noon the temperature recorded at the Observatory was 96.4.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">The previous highest record for the month was 96.1 on\u00a0<span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3757\" data-y=\"1837\" data-w=\"75\" data-h=\"25\">October<\/span>\u00a030,1885.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">A cool change which arrived on Sunday evening came as a great relief, though the absence of rain was disappointing. There were hopes that we might have a thunder storm to provide drinking water.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">Up till last week some scattered crops throughout the district promised moderate returns, but the effect of the intense\u00a0<span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3685\" data-y=\"2114\" data-w=\"74\" data-h=\"26\">heat<\/span>\u00a0upon them can be easily imagined. It is interesting to learn that some farmers have been able to cut a little hay in a year when the failure of the season has been widespread.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Yesterday, afternoon the weather was again oppressive, and light rain fell.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEWS AND NOTES.
