Rainfall is erratic and wet seasons are shrinking. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/docrep\/X5318E\/x5318e02.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN estimates\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0that roughly 80% of the Sahel\u2019s farmland is degraded even as roughly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@OECD\/herders-vs-farmers-resolving-deadly-conflict-in-the-sahel-and-west-africa-e096702b5055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">50 million people<\/a>\u00a0in the Sahel who depend on livestock compete for land.<\/p>\n<p>As of late 2018, an estimated<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/africarenewal\/news\/building-climate-resilience-and-peace-go-hand-hand-africa%E2%80%99s-sahel-%E2%80%93-un-forum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a033 million people in the Sahel<\/a>\u00a0are classified as food insecure. Impoverished communities struggle to safely access healthcare, find schools for their children, or secure a basic income.
