FAMINE 18 Oct 1890 They should have thought of having an extinction rebellion instead of the same old Irish one
(United Ireland, 23rd August,)
It is best to look facts, however dismal, squarely in the face. Once more Ireland is threatened at close quarters with famine. The potato crop, now as heretofore the sole support of the people in all the poorer districts, has failed.
From vague rumour and sickening apprehension we have passed into horrible certainty. Letters, resolutions of public bodies, and official reports confirm it.
The urgency of the danger has been able even to distract Mr. Balfour’s attention for a moment, though only for a moment, from his beloved golf. The most competent authorities declare that the scarcity will be greater than in 1879, when Ireland was saved from famine by the charity of the world.
Already men whisper under their breath with dismal forebodings of the horrors of the great famine year.
