Although not a complete record, the temperature in Sydney at 12.15 p.m. on Monday last had climbed to 107.8. The highest point reported in the State was at Cobargo, where the mercury reached 114 degrees.
Many country centres reported temperatures exceeding that of Sydney.
The highest readings reported were:
Cobargo 114deg., Richmond 113deg., Bega 111deg., Port Kembla, Bourke, and Trangie 110deg., West Maitland 109.5deg.
The maximum temperature on the Sunday was only 85 deg., . but the high range of humidity rendered the atmosphere very oppressive.
The longed for cool change did not reach the city until the early hours of Tuesday morning.
On January 13, 1896, the temperature in Sydney is said to have reached the record of 108.5 deg.
