Belated reports from Port au Prince, Haiti, indicate that a major disaster in remote areas resulted as an aftermath of the tropical hurricane, which, last week-end, caused considerable damage in Cuba and Jamaica.
Hundreds of people are reported to have been drowned in the towns of Jacmale and Jeremle, following torrential rains, and the indications are that the total deaths may exceed 1000, and will perhaps reach 1500.
Communications in the stricken areas are still disrupted.
The Government is rushing relief.
It is reported that thousands of the inhabitants are homeless, and are suffering from exposure and hunger.
