Grass fires throughout the coastal area generally, and around Newcastle and Sydney in particu
lar, are a reminder that the seasonal risk of serious outbreaks is about to recur.
The warmer weather, unless accompanied by rain, will turn much grass and bush into tinder,
in which a spark may prove disastrous.
Despite all the regulations designed to prevent bush fires, and much effective propaganda,
there are still many outbreaks attributed to nothing but wanton carelessness.
Everyone should remember that the glowing cigarette butt, a match dropped from a train or passing car, the embers of a pipe or a picnic fire can cause untold dam age.
Minute care in the handling or fire is a small price to pay for safety.
It is particularly desirable that town and city dwellers, accustomed to take for granted urban
safeguards and preventives, should remember that in the country they are at this. time of the
year dealing with inflamammable material and that there are no highly-organised firefight
ing services to retrieve immediately acts of carelessness.
