Heat Waves Tues 7th Feb 1939. 07 Feb 1939. The highest individual day was 115 on the 23rd. The concluding month of 1896 and the first two months of 1897 were hot. December, 1896, included two days of 114 and one of 110, and for five days on end, 30th January, 1897. to 3rd February, 1897, inclusive, the figures were: 104, 111, 116, 111 and 101. These figures included the hottest individual day (116, 46.6 Celsius on 1st February, 1897) so far as we have been able to ascertain, until last month, and they show an average for the five days of 108.6 daily.

Hot Summers and Cool Winters 04 Sep 1866. In 1709 occurred “the cold winter,” when all the rivers and lakes of Europe were frozen, and even the seas to the distance of several miles from the shore. The frost penetrated three feet into the ground ; birds and wild beasts were strewed dead in the fields ; and men perished by thousands in their houses. The Adriatic was quite frozen over; and even the coast about Genoa. The winter of 1716 was nearly as severe, and a fair was held on the Thames.

The Port Pirie Recorder. The Heat 03 Jan 1900. “The thermometer at Mr. Meylan’s (who keeps the official record) reached 117 degs. in the shade, which is the highest point touched here since the records have been taken.” 117 deg F = 47 Celsius. 6 degrees above the BOM new heat record.

IS WORLD WARMING UP? 01 Oct 1932. Going through records for 60 years. Mr. Mares found that Sydney has become very slightly warmer. For the 30 years, 1901-1930, the average temperature for the 12 months was half a degree higher than for the years from 1871 to 1900.

A Warmer World. 21 Jul 1932. SOME great world change is taking place on the Antarctic Continent. Its glaciers are shrinking. Commander L.A. Bernacchi, who visited the South Polar land 30 years ago, says that the Great Ice Barrier which fronts the continent with a wall of ice for 250 miles has receded at least 30 miles since it was first seen and surveyed.

Hawkesbury Heat. 18 Jan 1896. Yesterday (Sunday) the shade temperature at this Observatory reached 116.8 degrees, or the same as that attained on the 6th instant. To-day, however, the maximum recorded was 118.8 degs, the highest experienced here since 1862. 118 deg F = 48.2 Celsius
