Retrieved January 16, 2020, from <a href=\"https:\/\/trove.nla.gov.au\/newspaper\/article\/41507665?searchTerm=hot%20summers%20and%20cold%20winters&amp;searchLimits=#\">https:\/\/trove.nla.gov.au\/newspaper\/article\/41507665?searchTerm=hot%20summers%20and%20cold%20winters&amp;searchLimits=#<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=firefox-b-d&amp;q=Antarctica+had+it+hottest+day+on+record\">https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=firefox-b-d&amp;q=Antarctica+had+it+hottest+day+on+record<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"header l-header-ocr\">\n<div class=\"textPanel rightPanel\">\n<div class=\"read\">Wireless messages from the Byrd expedition, which is wintering in the Antarctic, state that so far the winter has been unseasonably warm for such low latitudes.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">For twelve days in succession, with one exception, the temperature was above zero, <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"4121\" data-y=\"803\" data-w=\"114\" data-h=\"34\">and<\/span> on<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"scrollable-content\">\n<div class=\"textPanel rightPanel\">\n<div id=\"fulltextContents\" class=\"fullText\">\n<form autocomplete=\"off\">\n<div class=\"zone onPage readMode\" data-page-id=\"2989904\" data-x=\"3660\" data-y=\"550\" data-w=\"710\" data-h=\"7027\" data-rotation=\"-1\">\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">one occasion the thermometer touched 16 deg. above zero.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">But even in this unseasonably weather the temperature has been well below freezing point.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">Mr. Haines, the senior meteorologist of the Byrd expedition, states that the streams of warm air are pouring through the upper atmosphere from the oceans to the north.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">He does not know whether the present spell of warm weather in the Antarctic is exceptional, as the data in regard to winter conditions are limited.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">According to popular belief there is a great similarity between the Arctic <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3787\" data-y=\"1432\" data-w=\"112\" data-h=\"36\">and<\/span> Antarctic regions, both being intensely <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3786\" data-y=\"1468\" data-w=\"112\" data-h=\"35\">cold,<\/span> covered with ice <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"4234\" data-y=\"1468\" data-w=\"112\" data-h=\"35\">and <\/span>snow, <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3788\" data-y=\"1505\" data-w=\"112\" data-h=\"35\">and<\/span> having months of continuous daylight in summer, <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"4123\" data-y=\"1542\" data-w=\"112\" data-h=\"37\">and<\/span> months of continuous darkness in winter.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">But to scientists the contrasts between the two Polar regions are more striking than their similarities.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">The Arctic region is an ocean, with numerous islands, <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3902\" data-y=\"1764\" data-w=\"112\" data-h=\"40\">and<\/span> is surrounded by the north coasts of the three continents of Europe, Asia <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"4121\" data-y=\"1839\" data-w=\"112\" data-h=\"38\">and<\/span> America, but the Antarctic is a continent surrounded by ocean.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">This continent of Antarctica is about 4,000,000 square miles in extent, <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3960\" data-y=\"1986\" data-w=\"96\" data-h=\"39\">and,<\/span> therefore, is not<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">only larger than Australia, but larger than Europe. \u201cAntarctica possesses a distinctive character, which in many particulars is distinctively unique,\u201d states Mr. J. Gordon Hayes, in his book \u201cAntarctica.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">\u201cIts most prominent feature is its dis-similarity from other continents. It has no water apart from the sea which en-circles it, <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3841\" data-y=\"2358\" data-w=\"84\" data-h=\"36\">and<\/span> this near the coasts is almost invariably frozen. It has no<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">rivers except a few small glacial streams, whose bonds are unsealed occasionally in summer. Glaciers are the rivers of Antarctica.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">It has no lakes, <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3769\" data-y=\"2578\" data-w=\"96\" data-h=\"42\">and<\/span> few frozen pools. It has no trees or flowers, no soil worth cultivating, no land animals, no inhabitants, <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3785\" data-y=\"2693\" data-w=\"112\" data-h=\"35\">and<\/span> has never seen a woman.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">It is positively unique as a continent in its isolation <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"4121\" data-y=\"2768\" data-w=\"112\" data-h=\"38\">and<\/span> height above sea level, in the heaviness of its glacierisation with its barrier of shelf ice, the magnitude of its glaciers <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"4250\" data-y=\"2880\" data-w=\"96\" data-h=\"40\">and <\/span>continental ice <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3929\" data-y=\"2918\" data-w=\"127\" data-h=\"36\">and<\/span> the velocity we might say ferocity\u2014of its winds.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">\u201cIn the distribution of land <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"4240\" data-y=\"2988\" data-w=\"106\" data-h=\"35\">and <\/span>water there are striking contrasts between north <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3898\" data-y=\"3065\" data-w=\"112\" data-h=\"34\">and<\/span> south Polar regions,\u201d states Dr. R. N. Rudmose Brown in his book \u201cThe Polar Regions.\u201d \u201cThe North Polar regions consist of an ice-covered sea almost completely girdled by continental land.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">In that sea, the Arctic Ocean, lie various groups of islands, large <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3675\" data-y=\"3360\" data-w=\"84\" data-h=\"37\">and<\/span> small, which are all more or less accessible. None lie in the heart of the ice-covered sea, but all are strictly Polar.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">The Pole itself is in deep water. Sea <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3843\" data-y=\"3512\" data-w=\"84\" data-h=\"32\">and<\/span> not land is the dominant feature of the Arctic. In the<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">south the principal feature is the great ice-covered continent on which lies the Pole. The continent is girdled completely by a great ocean, which cuts off Antarctica from the nearest<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">land masses.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">The Arctic is a region of varied climates, <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3965\" data-y=\"3806\" data-w=\"96\" data-h=\"44\">and<\/span> so of varied productiveness; the Antarctic has one<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">climate, that varies only in degrees, <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"3681\" data-y=\"3920\" data-w=\"168\" data-h=\"41\">and<\/span> is everywhere unproductive.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">The Arctic abounds in plant <span class=\"highlightedTerm\" data-x=\"4236\" data-y=\"3958\" data-w=\"112\" data-h=\"38\">and <\/span>animal life; the Antarctic, apart from the sea is a barren desert.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/form>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>POLAS WINTERS.
