On Thursday and Friday of last week, the Capel district experienced the worst outbreak of fires that can be remembered.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

There were fires in three different localities, the worst section being in the Stratham-Elgin area, where thousands of acres were burnt bare.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Volunteer firemen fought the blaze from midday Thursday until Friday night, and it was only because of these volunteers that many houses and sheds were not destroyed. The only buiding burnt was the old home on Mr. Geo. Jenkins property, but many other cases, the fire burnt right up to the buildings.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Other than the loss of valuable pasture, the main and serious loss to the farmers in the area was the extensive damage done to fences, one farmer in the area described Stratham as now being one large farm, with practically no fences left.<\/div>\n
The telephone posts and lines in this area also suffered badly, many posts being burnt to the ground.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The road bridge at the Elgin Post Office was destroyed by the fire, and it is reported that the Engineer from the Main Roads Department has inspected the bridge, and it will be repaired as soon as possible, but there<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

are other bridges in the South West which have also been destroyed and must be repaired, The midway bridge, just to the out of the Elgin siding was also destroyed; which stopped all rail traffic to Capel .and<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Busselton on Saturday, but by Monday morning, the Railway Department had this bridge repaired<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

enough to allow the trains to run again.<\/div>\n
At the Elgin Siding, a cow that had been loaded into a truck, had to be unloaded, as the truck had been Ignited from a flying spark, and before this could be made safe, part of the flooring of the truck had to be prised off<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

While most men were helping to fight the fire in the Elgin area, another fire started at “Cloverdale,” Messrs Norton Bros. property in the Tutunup area, which threatened the house, and quickly, spread towards<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Tutunup. At about the same time, another fire was reported in the Goodward area.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This latter fire, which came in from the hills, very quickly burnt through the properties of R. B. Yates. H. L. Yates and T. H.
