That\u2019s the contention of a group of 49 former NASA scientists and astronauts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>On March 28 the group sent a letter to NASA administrator Charles Bolden, Jr., blasting the agency for making <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/nasa-scientists-dispute-climate-change-2012-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-rapid-elm=\"context_link\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link\" data-rapid-sec=\"{&quot;entry-text&quot;:&quot;entry-text&quot;}\">unwarranted claims about the role of carbon dioxide in global warming<\/a>, Business Insider reported.<\/p>\n<div id=\"entry_paragraph_1\" class=\"advertisement-holder entry-paragraph-ad entry-body--paragraph-ad\" data-label-height=\"50\">\n<div class=\"ad_spot \">\n<div id=\"teads-entry_paragraph_1\" class=\"hp-teads-adspot ad-entry_paragraph_1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>\u201cWe believe the claims by NASA and GISS [NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies], that man-made carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated, especially when considering thousands of years of empirical data,\u201d the group wrote. \u201cWith hundreds of well-known climate scientists and tens of thousands of other scientists publicly declaring their disbelief in the catastrophic forecasts, coming particularly from the GISS leadership, it is clear that the science is NOT settled.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>The group features some marquee names, including Michael F. Collins, Walter Cunningham and five other Apollo astronauts, as well as two former directors of NASA\u2019s Johnson Space Center in Houston.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>The letter included a request for NASA to refrain from mentioning CO2 as a cause of global warming in future press releases and websites. The agency\u2019s \u201cGlobal Climate Change\u201d webpage says that \u201cHumans have increased atmospheric CO2 concentration by a third since the Industrial Revolution began. This is the <a href=\"http:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/causes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-rapid-elm=\"context_link\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link\" data-rapid-sec=\"{&quot;entry-text&quot;:&quot;entry-text&quot;}\">most important long-lived \u201cforcing\u201d of climate change<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>GRAPHIC FROM NASA WEBSITE<br \/>\n<img src=\"https:\/\/i.huffpost.com\/gen\/565137\/thumbs\/o-NASA-GLOBAL-WARMING-570.jpg?4\" alt=\"NASA Global Warming Stance Blasted By 49 Astronauts, Scientists Who Once Worked At\" aria-label=\"NASA Global Warming Stance Blasted By 49 Astronauts, Scientists Who Once Worked At\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>Of course, NASA isn\u2019t the only government agency to finger carbon dioxide as a key culprit in global warming.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>The EPA website says that \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climatechange\/science\/stateofknowledge.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-rapid-elm=\"context_link\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link\" data-rapid-sec=\"{&quot;entry-text&quot;:&quot;entry-text&quot;}\">Increasing levels of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide<\/a> in the atmosphere since pre-industrial times are well-documented and understood.\u201d It goes on to say that \u201cThe atmospheric buildup of CO2 and other greenhouse gases is largely the result of human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>What does NASA say?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>\u201cNASA sponsors research into many areas of cutting-edge scientific inquiry, including the relationship between carbon dioxide and climate,\u201d the agency\u2019s chief scientist, Dr. Waleed Abdalati, told The Huffington Post in an email. \u201cAs an agency, NASA does not draw conclusions and issue \u2018claims\u2019 about research findings. We support open scientific inquiry and discussion\u2026If the authors of this letter disagree with specific scientific conclusions made public by NASA scientists, we encourage them to join the debate in the scientific literature or public forums rather than restrict any discourse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Editor\u2019s note:<\/strong> We believe it\u2019s newsworthy when\u00a049 former NASA scientists and astronauts pen a letter to the agency \u2014 or to anyone \u2014 about climate change. But what really raised temperatures is when we asked our readers to weigh in. We\u2019ve removed the question because HuffPost is not agnostic on the matter.
