Scientists<\/span>\u00a0have<\/span>\u00a0confirmed<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0fact that<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Arctic<\/span>\u00a0regions<\/span>\u00a0around Spitzbergen are warming up at\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0rate of approximately one degree in every two years.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Since 1910, when observations first started in those\u00a0regions,<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0cumulative rise of winter temperature has amounted to nearly 16 degrees.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Such a profound change has been attended by new and strange phenomena over\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0whole area surrounding\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Polar basin. It has been found\u00a0that the<\/span>\u00a0Polar iceflelds are receding gradually northwards, while soil which at one time remained solidly frozen throughout\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0year now undergoes partial thaw during\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Arctic<\/span>\u00a0summers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Barents Sea area where, during earlier observations, only small patches became free from ice, large spaces of open water now occur at frequent intervals. Ice-breakers and other vessels which regularly make journeys to\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0far North are now able to penetrate with comparative ease into\u00a0regions<\/span>\u00a0which could not be reached twenty years ago.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

There has been a gradual drift northward of several kinds of fish into areas once completely ice covered.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0milder conditions\u00a0have<\/span>\u00a0not been confined to areas north of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Russian coast. From parts of Greenland comes evidence of a higher winter temperature, with considerably less snow, than was\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0case in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0early part of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0twentieth century. When this warming-up process was first noticed, says a writer in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0\u201cEvening Standard,\u201d\u00a0scientists<\/span>\u00a0were inclined to attribute it to a temporary increase in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0volume of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0North Atlantic Drift, or even to a change in\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>course of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0river of warmth, but subsequent events point to this theory being only partially correct.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Parts of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Polar\u00a0regions<\/span>\u00a0not affected by\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0warm waters\u00a0have<\/span>\u00a0grown decidedly warmer in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0last 20 years, while temperatures\u00a0have<\/span>\u00a0become higher in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0far north-east of Siberia and well inland\u2014remote from oceanic effects.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In support of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0belief\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Atlantic river of warmth cannot be wholly responsible for\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0widespread rise in temperature there are\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>trustworthy records obtained by Mr. J. B. Kincer, of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Weather Bureau at Washington, which show\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>rise in temperature at places as far apart as Canada and Africa, South America and Asia, Bombay and Santiago (Chile) has been well marked since\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0middle of last century.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It is possible\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0world as a whole is becoming warmer. One scientist puts forward\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0theory\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0an increase in carbon dioxide (due to\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>huge amounts of coal being used) may be responsible for such a change, while astronomers look to\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0sun for an explanation.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Quite apart from any fluctuations in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0sun\u2019s actual output of radiative energy, it is possible\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0warmth received from\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0sun may vary from time to time due to\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0earth passing through\u00a0regions<\/span>\u00a0of space in which meteoric dust is unevenly distributed.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
