Larger and better boats are being built for the arctic trawling grounds, arid improved methods adopted for handling the fish.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">In place of the old carriers which took catches from the trawlers and brought them to port in wells, ships fitted with refrigerating plants are being employed.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">At the landing ports cold storage warehouses have been erected where the fish can be kept in cold chambers, each fish being sealed up in an envelope to prevent the &#8220;frost&#8221; from spoiling its flavor.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">The &#8220;shooting&#8221; of nets in the inclement arctic regions is not carried out without considerable hardship to the trawler crews. But they are carefully &#8220;mothered&#8221; by the ships of the Admiral-<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">ty Fishery Patrol. At the same time these patrol evssels make surveys to discover new fishing grounds.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Britain&#8217;s best quality supplies of cod, plaice, and haddock already come from the chilly waters of such districts as those in the vicinity of Bar Island, close on the edge of the Spitzbergen banks.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zone onPage readMode\" data-page-id=\"8190722\" data-x=\"2046\" data-y=\"7287\" data-w=\"853\" data-h=\"1261\" data-rotation=\"-1\">\n<div class=\"paragraph onPage\">\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">An officer of the Admiralty Fishery Patrol, just back from survey work in the arctic, said that an increasing demand for fish had enforced a search for new sources of supply.<\/div>\n<div class=\"read\">Where a big haul was made one day, he said, there might by empty nets the next. In this<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">capricious fashion the herring had dis- appeared from the Dutch coast some years ago, while other classes of fish had moved from their old habitats in the North Sea.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\n<div class=\"read\">Drifters and trawlers, he continued, from such ports as Aberdeen, Hull, and Grimsby have had to look elsewhere for their catches.
