MELBOURNE, Nov. S. – Wind gusts up to 60 m.p. h. were registered at the Melbourne Weather Bureau this afternoon.
A gust which blew down 250 yards of a galvanised iron outer fence at Flemington racecourse was estimated at 70 m.p.h. Fierce north winds fanned bush fires and caused dust storms over most of Victoria.
Roofs and fences were swept away, windows blown in, power and telephone lines put out of action, and trees blown down.
Dozens of galvanised iron sheets from the roof of a hangar at Essendon airport were swept for
hundreds of yards across the tarmac.
