Bushfire authorities urged today that councils, particularly on the Blue Mountains, should act immediately to haye bushfire hazards removed from the vicinity of homes
and buildings.
Under the Bush Fires Act, councils have power to require owners to remove all fire hazards on
their properties, and make breaks.
If the instructions are flouted, councils can have the work carried out, debiting the cost to the owner or tenant.
Bush Fire Committee chairman H. E, Messer said today that there was a considerable quantity
of “dangerous – matter” on the mountains which constituted a grave risk.
General clean-up
“It is the presence of such matter that has resulted in much loss of property,” said Mr. Mes
ser.
“A general organised clean-up would be to the district’s advantage.”
Mr. Messer said that drying westerlies had already caused fires, and with the position rapidly
deteriorating pre cautionary action should betaken immediately.
A Springwood Bush Fire Brigade official, Don Whitington, said the Blue Mountains council had
never adequately enforced its power, although the brigade had urged it to take action.
