The lowest city temperature in January for more than 50 years was recorded in Melbourne at 12.30 p.m today, when the thermometer registered 57 degrees. The previous lowest maxi-
mum was 58 degrees in 1923, which was for the whole day.
This month has been notable for the number of cold days. Bathing has been suspended by all except the most hardy, and the early mornings of this week have had all the suggestion and
feeling of winter. Warmer weather is expected to return In a few days.
