Although mean temperatures in the metropolitan area were practically normal during February, decided variations between heat and cold were experienced, the Divisional Meteorologist (Mr. E. B. Curie wis) said on Saturday.
Two of the coolest days on record for February — 69.2deg. and 69.3deg. on February 24 and
25, respectively — were preceded by a heat spell of four days’ duration, and were followed by one of the coldest nights ever experienced in February.
During the month the temperature rose higher than 100deg. on three occasions and reached 106.3deg. on February 22, while the number of days exceeding 90deg. amounted to 10.
The following table shows a comparison of the days of over 90deg. maximum this summer, compared with the normals for previous years, indicating that it has been an average season in this respect: —
1934-35. Average.
November ….. 2
December ……6 9
January …….10 9
February…… 10 8
Total…………..25 25
The cool changes which occurred in the metropolitan area, Mr. Curlewis said, also affected the country districts, and maxima on the whole were below the average. Outstanding readings were
113deg. at Marble Bar on February 26, and at Winning Pool on February 20, and 112deg. at Derby on February 19.
