Is Earth Warmer In Antarctic?
MELBOURNE:
The chief geologist of the Australian Antarctic expedition (Mr. A. J. Lambeth) is anxious to get to Heard Island to test a theory that the earth is slowly getting warmer.
He will do this, by examining glacial deposits and making a geological survey of the island.
Already there is evidence that glaciers in The Alps of Europe and in Greenland are slowly
shrinking, indicating that the earth is becoming warmer.
Mr. Lambeth, who is a B.Sc., has a year’s leave from his job as chief geologist to Australian
Consolidated Industries.
“There is good evidence,” he said today, “that the world went through an ice age at the time
of man’s first development— about 10,000 years B.C.
Since then we geologists believe it has been getting steadily warmer.
