NEW YORK. — It won’t be long now before, coastal cities such as Brisbane, Melbourne, and Adelaide are 150 feet under the water and real estate around the Great Dividing Range is bringing colossal prices.
A scientist here has estimated that in as short a time as several thousand years, the ocean will rise 150. feet.- You may think several thousand years is a very long time, but believe me, to scientists, it is just a flick of an eyelash.
Ivan R. Tannahill, chief of U.S. Weather Bureau, says the evidence of a warming climate on earth is growing too large to be ignored, and we really should do something about it.
Actually this business of the earth getting hotter has been going on for about 100 years.
Last year New York’s temperature built up to 1550 degrees in excess of normal and the daily average was 4.3 degrees higher than it should have been.
Milder winters have been disrupting commerce in the U.S., England, Scandinavia and all over Europe.
In America.
In many places they find it hard to get good snow falls any more, so rather than go without their annual ski-ing events they import their snow by the truckload.
Boston used to be famous for its cod, but fishermen don’t catch it there any more: The Boston cod has become a staple fish around Greenland, where it was unknown 20 years ago.
Sea rising
SWEDISH and Norwegian authorities on glaciers say most of the glaciers in the world are melting and this is causing sea levels to rise at a steady rate.
Nobody is sure why the earth is getting hotter, but there are no end of theories about it.
One woman complained to her local member : “It’s them atom bombs.”
A preacher here said : “We’re getting closer to the gates of hell.”
An English meteorologist, Dr. GfS. Callendar, thinks an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the air is acting as an umbrella and keeping the heat on the earth’s surface.
A Stockholm geographer thinks something has happened to bring warm masses of air that ordinarily lie over the ocean, across the continents.
A Long Islander, near here thinks it’s all caused by these aeroplanes they’re putting up these days. They reflect the heat down like a tin roof.
Quite a lot of weather people are putting the blame on the long suffering sun spots.
But while people speculate ice recedes and new forests sprout in Alaska. Arctic temperatures are up five degrees, and think on this: —
There are 4,000,000 cubic miles of ice in Greenland. If this melted, cities such, as London, New York, and Washington would go under, and water would cover half the earth’s wealth.
Now you see, that is if permits are available, and if authorities have built all those houses and hospitals they were talking about, we must start building dykes around Australia in time for 3950 AD. It will be a big job.
