MELBOURNE, Tuesday.
To-day was the hottest for 24 years, the thermometer reaching- 108.9 at 2 p.m. This is the hottest since January 1908 when 109.3 was recorded.
Extreme temperatures were recorded in the interior, the highest being at Onyen, in the Mallee, when 121 degrees was registered.
Most inland towns sweltered in heat well over the century mark.
A new water consumption record was established in Melbourne when 133,731,000 gallons were consumed. The previous re- cord was set in February last year when the total was 129,797,600 gallons.
