Sat. Thousands of acres of virgin bush were burned out by bush fires this week following the heatwave last weekend.
Most destructive fire broke out about 40 miles east of Esperance. It burned for about 5 days to Mt. Merrivale, about 14 miles from Esperance. Heavy pall of smoke lay over Esperance Bay for days, and the brilliant glow of the fire in the east illuminated the night sky. Cause of the outbreak is unknown.
Another fire broke out in the bush near Boorabbin, about 99 miles west of here. It burned through timber country for many miles before burning out.
