Least publicised of the world’s current famines was that in Italy, where the Kazi locusts had eaten and destroyed as they retreated. Wrote an Eighth Army Tommy:

“At all times we are surrounded by hungry, half-starved children. But it is impossible for us to give anything but a few biscuits.

In one ravaged town all went away from our convoy but one small girl about 7. She was very thin and hungry, and kept looking at me with pathetic, pale blue eyes. I hadn’t the heart to send her away, but I had no biscuits, so in the end I gave her a 50 lire note to buy something”
