SYDNEY, Mon. — Sydney had a taste of real “outback weather” to-day— a yellow dust haze
spread over the city about 10.30 a.m„ and the temperature soared to 95.2 at 3.45 p.m.
Heavy rain fell for a few minutes at 11 a.m., developing in some suburbs into “mud showers.”
A heat wave extended to practically the whole of the State, and inland conditions were made more unpleasant by fierce duststorms that covered about three-quarters of the State.
Temperatures soared to the century mark in many centres, and reached the highest of this sum
mer.
Bourke recorded 110 degrees, and other recordings over 100 were at Coonamble 107, Toboo-
burra and Nyngan 106, Moree and Ivanhoe 105, Trangie and Dubbo 104 degrees.
Blinding duststorms swept these towns on Sunday, and to-day they were still blowing.
Coastal areas, too, have come into the grip of the heat wave, and temperatures of 100 and 102
were recorded at Grafton and Casino.
The Divisional Meteorologist, Mr. Mares, said to-day that a high pressure system from South Australia, accompanied by cooler and squally winds, is approaching, and when it strikes the hot conditions scattered thunderstorms and showers are likely to occur.
It was not expected that the cool change would reach the coastal areas until to-morrow.
