Very hot weather, with strong northerly winds, prevailed over the greater part of South Australia on Saturday, and the temperature at several places exceeded 100 deg.

The temperature continued to mount upwards until 1.30 p.m., when the maximum was reached.
The instrument then read 102.2 deg.
Towards evening a slight south westerly change set in, and the temperature fell to 71deg. at
9 p.m., and reached a minimum of 59.6 at 3 o’clock on Sunday morning. Sunday was fairly warm, the thermometer registering 80.8
Record heat for October was also experienced in Melbourne and Hobart.
In the former city, the mercury rose to 99 deg., the previous record being 96.1 deg. on
October 30, 1885, and in the latter it reached 92 deg., the previous highest being 91.5 deg. in 1845.
The Meteorological Department reported last night:-
The area of low pressure, which brought on it’s advancing side this heat wave, has passed away to the east. and a “high” is now advancing, it’s centre being situated over the ocean to the south
of the Great Bight.
Accordingly, fine weather, with cool to moderate temperatures may be expected on Monday, with
south to east winds.
Our Sydney correspondent telegraphed on Sunday:-

At Sydney to-day a shade temperature of 92.9 deg. was recorded, while
