famous. At 5 a.m. it was 70 degrees, and each hour it got hotter, until at half-past 1 the thermometer at the Observatory registered 103.2 in the shade.
In the centre of the city the shade reading was 107.3. At two o’clock a cool change came, and at 9 p.m. the temperature had fallen to 64 degrees.
