MELBOURNE, Wednesday. — Heat-wave conditions continue to scorch Melbourne, the noon temperature passing the 98 degree mark.
So far five people have died.
Some relief is promised for late today, but it will be of short duration, according to the Weather Bureau.
Last night one man died in a cell at the North Melbourne watchhouse , and another was found dead in a Richmond street.
Minimum temperature was 75 deg. at 1.30 am, the highest December minimum since 1041.
Seeking relief from the oppressive humidity people flocked to beaches, and at midnight thousands were still sleeping or lying on the nearer beaches.
The rush to the beaches caused the worst traffic jam at St. Kilda for some time.
The heat has caused a heavy run on the water supply, and some suburban reservoirs are nearly dry. Water was completely cut off in some suburbs yesterday.
After a record consumption of 208.6 million gallons yesterday, the Board of Works has announced a “state of emergency” in the supply of the metropolitan area.

Sydney had its hottest day for a month — 82.2 at noon. Average temperature for December is 76.9 degrees.
Shortly before 2 pm, how-ever, there- was a southerly change which brought about a drop in the temperature.

Urana, on the Victorian border, 400 miles from- Sydney and Wentworth, 720 miles SW have both had temperatures of over 100 degrees for three days.
Adelaide is also getting it. It was 100 at 11 am.
