MELBOURNE SWELTERS WATER RUNNING LOW
MELBOURNE, Dec. 6.-As Melbourne continues to swelter in a record December heat-wave, shops are making record sales of electric fans, refrigerators, men’s summer suits and even Panama hats.
Hundreds of people slept on bayside beaches last night, when the temperature was never be-
low 75 degrees, the hottest December night for nine years.
The Melbourne noon temperature to-day was 98 and was followed by a cool change, which
the Weather Bureau warned was only temporary.
Bushfire warnings have been issued and country fire brigades are on the alert.
At Boort, inland in Victoria, the temperature at 2.30 p.m. was 104 and still rising.
A state of emergency exists in the city water supply as consumption soars during the heatwave. The Board of Works warned to-day that thousands of people would be without water if three suburban water storages fell much lower.
North Essendon reservoir supplies failed for, three hours last night for the first time in history and again to-day. House holders in the western suburbs were without water and fire hydrants had no water pressure.
All Melbourne householders have been, warned to stop watering their gardens immediately
to prevent failure of supplies.
